'Under' – the latest project by acclaimed architectural firm Snøhetta, is a unique culinary experience semi-submerged beneath the icy waters of the North Atlantic on the southern tip of Norway.
Guests are invited to dine five and a half meters below the surface where a panoramic view of the ocean floor sets the dramatic backdrop. Artcoustic, together with Norwegian partner Level AudioVision, has created a bespoke soundscape, setting the ambience for Europe's first underwater restaurant.
In Norwegian, the name “under” has a dual meaning of "below" and "wonder", and this breath-taking restaurant truly lives up to its name. Half-sunken into the sea, the building’s 34-meter long, monolithic form breaks the surface of the water, resting directly on the seabed.
As a metaphor for the journey of descent when entering the restaurant, the colour of the textile-clad interior appears darker and more intense, the deeper guests venture beneath the waters’ surface.
The bespoke textiles stretched over custom-made Artcoustic speakers and acoustic panels, reference the colours of a sunset dropping into the ocean. The subtle elegance of the finely woven ceiling panels and the tailored Artcoustic installation lend a serene ambience to the venue.
From the entrance, the ceiling’s neutral colour deepens into a sunset pink, intense coral, sea green, finally culminating in a midnight blue, as guests arrive at the dining room.
At the seabed, in the 40-person dining room, lies the panoramic eye of the building. The eleven-meter-wide and 3.4-meter-tall horizontal window offers a visual gateway to the sea connecting guests to the wildlife which lays beyond.
Under’ has been a fascinating project to follow and we would like to extend a thank you to the amazing team at Level Group for a job well done and of course the owners of Under for choosing Artcoustic. Last but not least, congratulations to Snöhetta and the Under team for creating such an architectural gem.
